About this Episode:

Dr. Colleen Batchelder, CEO of Indivety, addresses burned-out new graduates struggling with unanswered applications and argues TikTok can be a powerful job-search tool. Citing reports that 46% of Gen Z workers have landed a job or internship through TikTok and that nearly half of consumers use it as a search engine, she shares a three-step strategy: pause applications for a week to learn from CareerTok content using hashtags like #jobsearch, #resumetips, and #careertalk; post short, relevant videos that showcase your skills and potential (such as interviewing five people like professors, friends, or past employers); and use TikTok to research companies, employees, customer sentiment, and culture before interviews to prepare stronger questions and assess fit. Homework: follow three career talk accounts, post one skills video, and research each company’s TikTok before interviews.

Welcome back to the Gen Z Evolution. I'm Dr. Colleen Batchelder, Forbes and Inc. contributor and CEO of Indiviti. And I wanna talk to the person right now who maybe just walked across the graduation stage, and you're already absolutely exhausted. You held your head up high at commencement, but if you're being honest, maybe part of you is longing for freshman year all over again. Because four years ago, you actually believed that college would give you a fighting chance in this job market. Fast-forward to now, and you're tired of applying to 200 jobs and hearing absolutely nothing back. If this is you in 2026, you're not alone. So today, I wanna give you one word that might change the game: TikTok. Yep, that's it, just TikTok. Here's how to actually use it to not just doom scroll, but to actually get a job. But before I give you the plan, let's look at why this actually works 46% of Gen Z workers say that they've actually landed a job or an internship through TikTok, and that's from Zety's 2025 Gen Z Career Trends Report, which surveyed nearly close to 1,000 Gen Z employees. And it's not just isolated to job hunting. A 2026 Adobe Express report found that nearly half of all consumers now actually use TikTok as a search engine. So this platform stopped from being just a dance choreography to something actually a little bit more meaningful, and it's the perfect thing to help you find your next job. So here's step one, and I want you to actually pause your applications before you do anything else. Before you send out one more, spend one week just learning from the people who actually do this for a living. I know, sending 200 applications a week feels like a full-time job, but volume doesn't make you a professional. Strategy is what does that. Look up the hashtags job search, resume tips, and career talk. Bookmark them, and then come back to them. Here's the proof that this works. A Youngstown State University survey of close to 1,000 Millennial and Gen Z professionals found that 66% of Gen Z professionals have actually used TikTok for career or job search advice, and 12% actually landed a job from someone they learned from on that platform. So think of career talk like a free college course. Find the accounts giving real advice for your specific field, and then follow them like it's your absolute job, because it really is. Step two, if you just graduated, you really don't have years of experience, and that's fine. Hiring managers already know that. But if you can't prove yourself on page, then you need to prove your- yourself in a never, another way, and that's where TikTok comes in hand. This doesn't need to be a production. All you're doing is showcasing your skills, your talent, and your background in a short, snappy, and relevant clip. Here's the myth that I wanna bust. If you want a job as a reporter, your feed should not be about your favorite ice cream flavor. You get it, right? Your feed needs to give proof of your future success, not your past experience. So here's what that looks like in practice. Reach out to five people, friends, former professors, past employees, and employers, and interview them on camera. You don't need a celebrity. You don't need someone with a huge following. All you need is a real story that resonates with the person watching on the other end. And step three, one of the worst things you can do in an interview is just sit there with no questions to ask, and that almost always comes from not researching enough. TikTok, again, is that search engine, and it's a research goldmine that most people never really tap into. Follow the company page, look at past and present employees, and then search for relevant hashtags. Here's the bonus. This research doesn't just prepare you with good questions, it also tells you whether this is even the right fit to begin with. Watching real videos and carousels from inside a company will tell you more about the culture in five minutes than a careers page ever will. Finding a job after graduation isn't easy, I get it, but finding the right job is absolutely impossible if you don't know where to actually look. So here's your homework for this week that's truly gonna make all the difference. Follow three, only three career talk accounts in your field. Post one short video that actually showcases your skills, and then before that interview, research the company's TikTok before you even walk through the door. Open up that app, let it work for you instead of against you. That's it for this episode of The Gen Z Evolution. I cannot wait to see you next time
